2G scam: ED to attach properties of 2 telcos

New Delhi: In more trouble for telecom companies involved in the 2G spectrum scam, the Enforcement Directorate today told the Supreme Court that properties worth Rs. 2,000 crore each of two firms will be attached soon. Property worth Rs 2,000 crore each has to be attached relating to these companies,' senior advocate K K Venugopal, appearing for the ED, submitted before a bench comprising justices G S Singhvi and A K Ganguly. Venugopal, who was reading the excerpts of the fresh tatus report of the ED submitted in a sealed cover, did not mention the names of the companies but assured that attachment proceedings will be initiated soon and will be completed within two months. The bench meanwhile termed as 'flabbergasting' the magnitude of money transactions in the 2G scam. The scam, which, according to CAG estimates runs into Rs 1.76 lakh crore, left the bench perplexed as they perusedthe ED report giving details of illegal transaction of thousands of crores by the errant telecom companies. 'We are not familiar with such figures,' the bench said, adding that investigating officers who are probing the case must also be surprised with the amount involved in the scam. 'Gradually, figures are getting multiplied. Officers must also be flabbergasted by these figures,' the bench said after going through the report. The bench said 'ultimately retrospection has be done by people themselves.' Venugopal hinted that attachment orders will be issued shortly under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA), against the two companies against whom the ED has so far registered the complaints. 'It will be done in two months time against the companies whose names have been mentioned in the complaints. We have to collect details of their properties as many of the companies keep benami properties,' the senior advocate said when the bench asked how much time will the ED take to complete the investigation. The ED in its status report said investigation was in progress regarding the involvement of five foreign companies in the 2G scam which are registered in Virgin Island. On hearing this, the bench asked 'what is the response of the CBI on it?' Venugopal said till now the ED has not written about it to the RBI and future course of investigation will follow. However, he said action has been taken and complaint has been registered for FEMA violation of Rs 4,000....

Maharashtra village first in India with right to harvest bamboo

Gadchiroli (Maharashtra): Mendha-Lekha, a remote village in the Maoist-affected Gadchiroli district of eastern Maharashtra, has become the first in the country where tribals have been given the right to sell bamboo harvested from the surrounding forests, an official said. The villagers, numbering around 3,000, attended the function Wednesday when village head Devaji Tofa was handed over a transit passbook, enabling the villagers to sell the bamboo from the region in the markets. The transit passes are required to take the bamboo from the village to the market, but the state forest department had refused the facility to the villagers for over one-and-a-half years. 'This is a historic occasion which serves to empower the local villagers and make them economically stronger,' Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said on the occasion. Chavan said that though Gadchiroli with 78 percent forest cover is the greenest district in the state, it is also the most economically backward. Ironically, the green cover was restricting the scope of taking up developmental projects in the district and this in turn was giving rise to the problems of Maoists here, Chavan remarked. In addition, Chavan pointed out being a remote district hard hit by Maoism, officials refused to take up postings here. 'Around 40 percent of the government posts here are lying vacant, further hampering development prospects here. Giving forest rights to the local people is the best way to save our forests,' Chavan said. Speaking on the occasion, union Minister for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh said that the revolutionary move on bamboo would now place a greater responsibility on the villagers to protect forests. He said that since 2006 when the Forest Rights Act was implemented, 1.10 million people around the country have been vested with the right to gather and sell minor forest products like bamboo, mahua, tendu leaves and sal seeds. 'Of these (1.10 million), 1,00,000 tribals are in Maharashtra alone. However, the country still lags behind in giving community rights over the local forests,' Ramesh said. From the total of 2,800 community rights over forests given around the country, as many as 691 villages are in Maharashtra alone, and Ramesh called for giving similar rights to more villages. The state forest department drew flak from all the dignitaries for refusing to give the transit passes to the local villagers. Ramesh went to the extent of warning the....

Lobsang Sangay is new Tibetan PM-in-exile

Dharamsala: US-based Lobsang Sangay, a 42-year-old who considers India his second home after Tibet, was Wednesday elected the new Kalon Tripa, or the Tibetan prime minister-in-exile. Sangay, a senior fellow of Harvard Law School who was born in India, has been chosen in the third direct elections for the Kalon Tripa that were held March 20. He will succeed the incumbent, Samdhong Rinpoche, who was chosen twice to the post. Sangay's five-year stint is expected to be full of challenges, with the Tibetan parliament giving a nod to the transfer of political power from Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, to the newly elected political leader. Election official Jamphel Choesang told IANS here that Sangay polled 27,051 votes. 'Sangay got 55 percent of the total votes,' he said. Choesang said the newly elected prime minister would take oath only after the tenure of the present cabinet expires in August. Diplomat Tenzin Namgyal Tethong and Tashi Wangdi were the other contestants. They got 18,405 and 3,173 votes respectively. Tethong also lives in the US, whereas Wangdi has been the Dalai Lama's representative in Brussels, New York and New Delhi. Sangay was born in 1968 in exile in India. He is often quoted as saying, 'India is my second home. I have never been to my first home (Tibet).' His father, who was settled in a village near Darjeeling, also fled Tibet in 1959 along with the Dalai Lama. Incumbent Rinpoche had become the first directly elected prime minister for a five-year term in September 2001 after the Dalai Lama called for a directly-elected political leader of the exiles. Rinpoche cannot re-contest as the Tibetan charter bars any individual from holding the office for more than two terms. The Dalai Lama, 75, and his supporters fled Tibet and took refuge in India when Chinese troops moved in and took control of Lhasa in 1959. He has since headed the Tibetan government-in-exile here, but this year decided to give up his political authority. Some 140,000 Tibetans now live in exile, over 100,000 of them in different parts of India. Over six million Tibetans live in Tibet.

Cricket overshadowing other sports in India: Sebastian Coe

London: Olympic gold medallist Lord Sebastian Coe, who is organising committee chairman for the 2012 London Olympics, believes cricket is overshadowing other sports activities in India. In an exclusive interview to Asian Lite, a leading publication for British Asian communities, Coe said the popularity of cricket, especially among the younger generation, is preventing the growth of other sports activities, particularly athletics. 'Indian diaspora can create role models from the world of athletics to promote sports activities other than cricket,' said Coe, 53, a gold medallist at the 1980 Moscow Olympics. 'We at London 2012 want to help Asian communities to create globalised role models,' Lord Coe said. 'Recently at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Delhi in 2010, Indians realised that they have very talented athletes and it is not just about cricket, and other games can create very strong legacies.' Monty Panesar, a left arm spinner, Nasser Hussain, former English cricket captain, and Mark Ravin Ramprakash, a first class English cricketer, are among the few Indians who have represented Britain both - at the county and international level. Amir Khan, the British boxer of Pakistani descent, is one of those from outside the world of cricket. Khan currently is the WBA World super lightweight champion, who won the belt at the age of 22, making him Britain's third-youngest world champion after Naseem Hamed with Yemeni roots and Herbie Hide with Nigerian origin. When asked about developments in India with regard to the arrest of CWG organising committee chief Suresh Kalmadi for his alleged involvement in corruption and his removal from the post of president of the Indian Olympic Association, Coe declined to reply saying: 'The matter is for the Indian Olympic Association to decide.' The development could have a ripple effect in his efforts to keep sports away from politics. 'London 2012 wants to leave a legacy in a number of areas and wants to ensure that sport is high up on the social and political agendas in countries around the world,' he said. And, in this quest, Lord Coe is trying to merge the process with Britain's ethnic South Asian community with the help of his chairmanship and his Punjabi background. 'The beauty of the Olympic and Paralympic Games is that no two Games are the same. Sydney was a fantastic Games with a great atmosphere and we would very much like to emulate this,' he said. Whereas Sydney 2000 raised....

Rituparno Ghosh takes the plunge into 'queer' film

Kathmandu: After 'Arekti premer golpo' (Just another love story) and 'Memories in March', both of which have strong gay protagonists and Rituparno Ghosh stepping out in front of the camera, the Bengali film director has now completed shooting his first 'queer' film, which is also a metaphor for his own sexual transformation. The 47-year-old was in Kathmandu recently to talk about his life, films and the recent 'queer shift' in career at 'Count me IN', a three-day conference by New Delhi-based rights organisation Crea to raise awareness about the ongoing violence against the marginalised: differently abled women, sex workers, gays, lesbians and transgenders. The 'significant shift' in Rituparno's life - when he began publicly appearing in a woman's persona - had 'a lot' to do with the passing away of his mother. 'Queers are supposed to be irresponsible to their families,' he told a spellbound audience. 'People think their parents don't love them. My world centred around my parents.' His wish not to see them suffer social ridicule held him back from revealing his sexual identity. After his mother's death, the other factor that gave him the courage to come out of the closet was Singur, the town in West Bengal's Hooghly district where people's protests at the taking over of their land to build the Tata Group's Nano car factory led to violence, deaths and ultimately, the withdrawal of the factory. 'I was editing a publication and my first edit was on Singur,' he said. 'It gave me a sense of courage. I thought if I can write against an establishment... it opened the door for other avenues of courage.' Despite his celebrity status - or perhaps because of it - the emergence was not painless for the eight-times National Film Award winner. He mentioned a popular talk show on Bengali television in which the host constantly mocked him by caricaturing him. Rituparno replied by inviting the host to his own talk show. 'I told him, when you imitate P.C. Sorcar or Mithun Chakrabarty, it's personal. But when you imitate me (as a transgender), you caricature a whole community. I also told him, please mention in future then that this is a caricature of Rituparno Ghosh and nobody else.' The two biggest artistic and cultural influences on him came from Rabindranath Tagore, who has been an abiding influence on all Bengalis and whose transitions from the male into the female voice have never struck a discordant note, and Satyajit Ray. 'If somebody....

Indians don't need films to watch sex: Ekta Kapoor

New Delhi: Bored of the idiot box, TV tzarina Ekta Kapoor is fearlessly entering the bedroom space with films like 'Love Sex Aur Dhokha', 'Ragini MMS' and 'Dirty Picture'. But she says titillating the audience is not her agenda as Indians don't have to go to movie theatres to watch sex. 'There is lovemaking, but there is no sex in our films,' a nonchalant Ekta told IANS in an interview. 'I personally believe in our country, if you want to see sex, you can go online and download it for free. Why would somebody pay Rs.50 or Rs.100-Rs.200 for a movie ticket just to watch sex?' Referring to her movies, she said: 'There is no sex in these films. But in none of these films do we run away from sex. They have just been labelled titillating. When I made TV shows, people called them regressive. Clearly, everyone wants to generalise everything. In 2010, Ekta launched ALT Entertainment, a sister concern of her Balaji Telefilms Ltd, to cater to upwardly mobile young Indians with television and film content. She released Dibaker Banerjee's bold and explicit project 'Love Sex Aur Dhokha' under the banner, and realised there is a definite market for subjects and treatment that are closer to reality. So now comes 'Ragini MMS', about a couple who go for an adventurous weekend and get filmed by 24 cameras amid some paranormal activity, and 'Dirty Picture', which traces the life of sex icon Silk Smitha. 'I choose a mid path. I can easily tell you that none of these films is high on sexuality. In fact a lot of our Hindi films where they show dupattas flying and deep cleavage, have a lot more sexuality. The difference is that they show it in a covert, more hidden way. But actually it is much more titillating,' said the daughter of Bollywood's Jumping Jack, the veteran star Jeetendra. Caught in an unusually fun-loving mood at a hotel here, Ekta broke into guffaws the moment the stark contrast between her family-oriented dramas and the films was pointed out. She is after all known for soaps like 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi' and 'Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki.' 'I am a living contradiction. I am chalk and cheese. Expect the unexpected from me! I can easily manage the two sides because I am a Gemini - a woman of all moods - I am Bohemian and conservative,' she said. But 35-year-old Ekta, who kept fiddling with the many threads and bracelets worn on her left wrist for superstitious reasons, finally gave the reason behind the films. 'I was getting extremely....

Olympian Carl Lewis barred from US state poll race

New York: New Jersey election authorities have decided that retired track and field star Carl Lewis, winner of nine Olympic gold medals, does not meet the residency requirement to run for the state Senate in this year's elections. New Jersey Secretary of State Kim Guadagno announced Tuesday that Lewis's name must be removed from the ballots for the Democratic primary, in which the party's candidates for the Senate race will be determined. 'I find that respondent was not a resident of New Jersey for the constitutionally required four years prior to the date of the election for the office he now seeks,' Guadagno said in a 15-page opinion. According to election laws, to participate in political races as a candidate in New Jersey one must have resided in the state for a minimum of four years prior to the election in which one wants to compete. Representatives of the Democratic Party feel that the former athlete certainly meets that requirement, given that they say he bought his first home in New Jersey in 2005. Republicans, however, assert that Lewis cannot run because up until 2009 he was registered to vote in California, among other things. Both Guadagno and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie are Republicans. Lewis announced April 11 that he intended to compete for the state Senate seat in District 8, an area dominated by Republicans. The athlete was born July 1, 1961, in Birmingham, Alabama, but was raised in the Garden State. Lewis won gold medals in the 1984, 1988, 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympic Games. After years spent living in Texas and California, he returned to New Jersey in 2005. The elections for the state Senate and General Assembly in New Jersey, both currently controlled by Democrats, will be held next November.

Endosulfan: Achuthanandan writes to all CMs to press for ban

Thiruvananthapuram: Seeking to widen his government's campaign against Endosulfan, Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan has written to his counterparts in other states requesting them to bring combined pressure on the Centre to impose a nationwide ban on the pesticide. Ahead of a Kerala 'hartal' tomorrow called by ruling CPI(M)-led LDF on the Endosulfan issue, Achuthanandan, in his letter, highlighted the ill-effects due to use of the pesticide over the years in Kerala's Kasargode district where over 400 people died and hundreds were suffering from serious health problems. He also attached copies of reports of studies on the death and environmental devastation caused by Endosulfan spraying over the years in a state-run cashew estate in Kasargode. The 87-year-old CPI-M leader, who recently observed a day-long fast on the issue, wanted his counterparts to prevail upon the Centre to ask for global ban on Endosulfan at the ongoing Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants. Realising the grim danger posed by the pesticide to living beings and nature, it had been banned by 80 countries but the UPA Government at the Centre was still reluctant to take action, Achuthanandan said. He said there was no need for further studies to establish the grievous consequences of Endosulfan as the experience of Kerala had sufficiently brought out that aspect. An all-party delegation from Kerala had met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recently to press the demand for ban of Endosulfan. PTI

Endosulfan: Study would take 3 years for completion: ICMR

New Delhi: With the protest against endosulfan getting strength day by day, the Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR) director Dr Vishwamohan Kadoch said that it would take at least 3 years to complete the study on endosulfan, which indicates that a ban on the pesticide won't be a reality soon. It would take at least 2 months to decide the plan on how the study should be conducted. Meanwhile it is being reported that even if the Stockholm convention bans the pesticide, there is no responsibility to implement the ban as India produces 70% of the total endosulfan in the world. Among the total companies producing endosulfan in India, 2/3 are private players. The parallel pesticides being prescribed for endosulfan is of high price. So endosulfan is supported by North Indian farmer lobbies and prime minister also won't be able to neglect the same.createSummaryAndThumb("summary9148276929776534380");

SC gives split verdict on BCCI rule change on IPL and T-20

New Delhi: A two-judge bench of the Supreme Court today delivered a split verdict on a petition challenging amendment in BCCI regulation to exclude IPL and T-20 tournaments from its perview and referred the matter to the chief justice for allocating it to a larger bench. The petition, filed by former BCCI president A C Muthiah, had alleged that the amendment was brought to favour the cricket board's secretary N Srinivasan who owns the T-20 team Chennai Super Kings. With the division bench comprising justices J M Panchal and Gyan Sudha Mishra giving the split verdict, the petition has been referred to the chief justice for allocating it to a larger bench. While Justice Panchal dismissed the petition filed by Muthiah, challenging the validity of the amendment in clause 6.2.4, Justice Mishra allowed the petition holding that a BCCI officer bearer cannot have stake in the IPL team. 'If Srinivasan opts to hold interest in the IPL team, he shall be able to do so but restrained to hold any office in BCCI,' Justice Mishra said .

Godhra probe panel summons Sanjiv Bhatt

Gandhinagar: The Nanavati-Mehta commission probing the 2002 Godhra train carnage and the communal riots in Gujarat thereafter, Wednesday summoned top police officer Sanjiv Bhatt to depose before it May 16. The summons has been issued on an application filed by lawyer-activist Mukul Sinha, who has been representing the riot victims on behalf of the Jan Sangharsh Manch(JSM). Sinha moved a plea seeking to cross examine Bhat after the Indian Police Service (IPS) officer after filed an affidavit before the Supreme Court, which said Chief Minister Narendra Modi had allegedly directed the police to go slow on rioters and to allow the Hindus to vent out their anger. When contacted, Sanjiv Bhatt said: 'I received a telephone call from C.G. Patel, secretary of the commission, informing me to be present on May 16.' Bhatt will be deposing before the probe panel for the first time. According to sources, the officer's deposition will have serious fallout for the state government as the cross examination is open to media coverage. Sanjeev Bhatt, a 1988 cadre IPS officer and the principal of the Reserve Police Training College in Junagadh, earlier this month filed an affidavit before the Supreme Court, claiming that he was present at an emergency meeting held Feb 27, 2002, to review the law and order situation following the Godhra train carnage, which left 59 people dead and triggered a violence that claimed over 1,200 people. He claimed in the affidavit that the chief minister had instructed the police authorities to allow Hindus to vent out their anger. Soon after the contents of the affidavit became public, the then Gujarat director general of police, K. Chakravarthy, disputed Bhatt's claim, saying that he was not present at the key official meeting. Chakravarthy in his testimony before the Nanavaty panel Oct 28, 2004 had said that he did not remember if his immediate boss, the then minister of state for home, Gordhan Jhadapia, and urban development minister I.K. Jadeja were present at that meeting.

Gujarat riots probe team gives report to apex court

New Delhi: The Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the 2002 Gujarat riot cases Monday submitted a status report before the court. The report was filed giving details of investigation after amicus curiae Raju Ramachandran give his comments on its (SIT) earlier report. The SIT report was submitted to the court in a sealed cover which would be opened when the matter comes up for hearing April 27. The SIT was asked to investigate into the complaint by Zakia Jaffri, the widow of former Congress MP Ehsan Jaffri killed in the Gulberg society massacre in the wake of post-Godhra riots in Gujarat. In all 69 people were killed in the massacre. A Gujarat cadre Indian Police Service officer Sanjiv Bhatt, in a recent affidavit before the apex court, alleged that instructions were issued by Chief Minister Narendra Modi that the Muslims needed to be taught 'a lesson' for the February 2002 Godhra train burning that left 59 kar sevaks dead and that Hindus should 'be allowed to vent their anger'. He alleged the administration and police were told not to effectively intervene in controlling the rioters as Muslims needed to be taught a lesson. In the course of the last hearing of the matter, Ramnachandran gave his comments on the earlier SIT report on its investigation into the complaint by Zakia Jaffari. The court asked the SIT chairman R.K. Raghvan to look into the points raised by the amicus curiae and conduct further investigation on it.

Sai Baba's aide given police protection

Puttaparthi: The late Sathya Sai Baba's trusted aide Satyajit has been given police protection following intelligence inputs that he may be facing a threat to his life. Satyajit, a native of Tamil Nadu, had been the Baba's main 'caretaker' for many years. He, however, had been facing a lot of allegations ever since the Baba was hospitalised on March 28. The main allegation was that Satyajit did not feed the Baba proper food and gave him lot of sedative drugs, resulting in deterioration of the latter's health, police sources said. Doctors who treated the Baba in the Satya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences neither confirmed nor denied that sedative drugs were given to him prior to his admission in hospital following respiratory problems. Satyajit, along with the Satya Sai Central Trust secretary K Chakravarthi, is said to be enjoying the cheque signing power on behalf of the Trust and is seen as a most powerful man in the Ashram affairs.'There are some people within the Ashram as well as outside who are antagonistic to Satyajit. There is a possibility of someone causing harm to his life in the wake of the Baba's demise. As such he is being provided police protection,' a senior police official said. Satyajit made only a brief appearance near the Baba's body last evening and remained mostly confined to his room in Prasanthi Nilayam where the Baba lived. It is learnt that Satyajit has been advised to stay confined to Prasanthi Nilayam till the last rites of the Baba who died on Sunday after battling multi-organ failure. PTI

Left party MPs demand ban on endosulfan pesticide

New Delhi;A group of Left MPs today held a protest in Parliament House demanding a ban on endosulfan pesticide and questioned whether the reluctance on part of the government to take action in this regard pointed to another 'scam'.Addressing the protestors, CPI(M) Polit Bureau member Sitaram Yechury said 84 countries have banned the pesticide and they are 'not fools' do so. 'We demand a nationwide ban on the pesticide. Why have 84 countries ban it? Why is the government hesitant? That is why we suspect that another scam is waiting to happen. 'Are the companies making a killing by selling these deadly pesticides, in which case who is protecting them? Is that the reason why this government is not imposing a ban on the pesticide,' Yechury said. He said the Left was not politicising the issue as alleged by Congress. 'We are just raising a humanitarian issue,' he said. There is a demand for banning the pesticide across the country with Kerala Chief Minister V S Achutanandan leading the agitation by going on a day-long fast yesterday. The use of endosulfan, which is already banned in Kerala, had led to serious health hazards in Kasargod district. Rajya Sabha member P Rajeeve said the Left parties were demanding a country-wide ban on the pesticide. 'We are protesting the stand taken by the country at the Stockholm Conference which is dealing with the question of banning the pesticide,' he said. P K Biju, a CPI(M) MP in Lok Sabha, said 84 countries have already banned the pesticide. 'There has been 16 conventions earlier. What we need from the government is a strong stand on the issue at the Stockholm Conference,' he said. The Government yesterday said it would take a view on the issue 'in the best interest of the country' after the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) submits its report. 'The use of Endosulfan has been banned in Kerala. However, imposing a nationwide ban would require national consensus backed by scientific study,' a PMO release said after Oommen Chandy, Leader of Opposition in Kerala and KPCC chief Ramesh Chennithala met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Noting that a committee chaired by Director General of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) was presently examining the harmful effects of Endosulfan on the health of the people, the PMO said the Committee would be asked to 'expedite' its report. An all-party delegation from the state met the Prime Minister on February 22....

Chennai Super Kings triumph over Pune Warriors by 25 runs

Chennai: Chennai Super Kings dug deep into their reserves to snatch a deserved 25-run win against Pune Warriors to boost their campaign in the Indian Premier League at the MA Chidambaram Stadium here Monday. In a low-scoring game, the Super Kings, asked to bat first, stuttered to 142 for six with the consistent opener Michael Hussey making a 48-ball 61 and then came up with inspired bowling and fielding to restrict the visitors to 117 for nine with skipper Yuvraj Singh (34) playing a lone hand for the vanquished. It was Super Kings' third win in six matches and moved them up the league table with six points while the Warriors slid to their third defeat in five outings to remain on four. The Warriors gave themselves a chance to win as seamers Jerome Taylor (3 for 30) and Alfonso Thomas (2 for 29) struck decisive blows after Hussey and Murali Vijay had put on 64 runs for the first wicket. For the Super Kings, new ball bowlers Albie Morkel (3 for 29) and Doug Bollinger (2 for 20), besides off-spinner Ravichandran (2 for 19) did a fine turn. The Chennai innings was a stop-start affair and never really took off despite Vijay (31) and Hussey providing a solid start. With the ball tending to stop a bit, stroke-making was never an easy task and it was all that the Super Kings openers could do to nudge and push with an occasional big hit to keep the score ticking. However, a double strike by Thomas in the 10th over that saw Vijay and Suresh Raina depart, put the Warriors on top before the hosts recovered with a 58-run partnership between Dhoni (26) and Hussey. But the Super Kings were fast running out of overs and the runs came in a trickle. The Super Kings went without a boundary for four overs until Dhoni opened out with a six. Neither Hussey nor Dhoni could dominate as the Warriors bowlers bowled a tight line and length, backed by some inspired fielding. It was not long before desperation set in, leading to a flurry of wickets as Dhoni, Hussey and Albie Morkel lost their wickets in an attempt to step up the run rate. In fact, the last four overs fetched the Super Kings a measly 24 runs, leaving them at least 20 short, but something to bowl at. The Pune chase was off to a sensational start as wickets fell in a heap. Morkel and Ashwin picked up two apiece in four consecutive overs between them despite taking some punishment to reduce the visitors to 40 for four in the sixth over. There was a flicker of recovery by Pune with....

India not to support ban on endosulfan in Stockholm convention

Geneva: Ignoring all the protests against hazardous pesticide endosulfan , it is clear that India won't support the global ban proposed for endosulfan in the fifth Conference of the Parties to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) , which began here on Monday. The recommendation for ban on endosulfan will come up for discussion on Tuesday as per the tentative scheduled for the meeting. Initial reports from the conference indicate that India is working for a consensus in the Asia-Pacific group against the ban. The Persistent Organic Pollutant Review Committee of the Convention, which met in Geneva in October last year, had recommended adding endosulfan to Annex A of the Convention which means a global ban on the pesticide that caused the death of hundreds of people in Kerala and elsewhere. India had dropped out of discussion at the Review Committee meeting after opposing the proposal The Stockholm Convention as adopted in 2001 called for international action on 12 POPs grouped into three categories: pesticides (aldrin, chlordane, DDT, dieldrin, endrin, heptachlor, mirex and toxaphene), industrial chemicals (hexachlorobenzene and polychlorinated biphenyls) and unintentionally produced POPs: dioxins and furans. Currently, 21 chemicals are slated for global phase-out. Governments are to promote best available techniques and best environmental practices for replacing existing POPs while preventing the development of new POPs.

Ordinary devotees find it difficult to get glimpse of Baba

Puttaparthi;Ordinary devotees flocking Prasanthi Nilayam here for a final darshan of Sathya Sai Baba are left disappointed as they are unable to catch a glimpse of his mortal remains even as the rich and the mighty are being extended special privileges to get closer to his body. The queue lines for the common devotees are blocked at least 30 feet away from the glass casket in which the Baba's body is lying, depriving them of a clear view. Added to this, a platform erected for a lone camera, along with the equipment and the cameraman too are blocking the view for the devotees, leaving them totally anguished. VIPs apart, only a select few are being allowed to go near the Baba's body for a clear darshan. 'We came all the way from Payakaraopet in Visakhapatnam district and stood in the serpentine queue for more than three hours in the wee hours today. 'In the end, as we entered the Sai Kulwanth Hall, we could hardly catch a glimpse of the Baba's body. All we could see from the distance was the Baba's orange robes as the face was not at all visible,' complained N Appalanaidu. His wife and son too could not see anything as suddenly some influential person went near the Baba's body and they were pushed aside in the queue. While the VIPs and the rich devotees, who are said to be regular donors to the Satya Sai Central Trust, are able to get up close to the Baba's body, another special line was formed a few feet away to enable friends and relatives of Trust members, government officials and police to get a glimpse. From this line, the Baba's face can be seen from a side angle but access is restricted only to a select few. Many foreign devotees who flew down to Puttaparthi too are decrying the discrimination. 'During my earlier visit to Sai Kulwanth Hall when the Baba was alive, I could see him closely. Now, I had no such luck,' Dissanayike from Sri Lanka lamented. The situation turned worse this morning as the queue was moved further behind as a security measure in view of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's visit.Further security restrictions are expected to be put in place by the time Singh and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi reach the Hall for paying homage to Baba around 4.45 pm.PTI

Toxic water level increases in Japan's crippled N-plant

Tokyo/Fukushima;The embattled operator of Japan's radiation-leaking Fukushima nuclear complex today said the level of toxic water in two of the six reactors of the plant has risen, which is hampering the critical work of restoring its cooling functions. Workers of the operator, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), are engaged in moving highly radioactive water from the tunnel of the No. 2 reactor to a temporary storage facility. However, the power company said the water level in the tunnel of the No. 3 reactor rose to 99 centimetres below the surface last evening. That passes the level at which TEPCO plans to remove the water, but it is yet to secure storage space, national broadcaster NHK reported. The water level in the basement of the No.3 reactor's turbine building also rose by 10 centimetres over 3 days, more than a month after a magnitude-9 quake and tsunami left nearly 30,000 people dead or unaccounted for in Japan's north east. Earlier, a survey found an increase in the density of radioactive substances in the water in the basement of the No. 4 reactor's turbine building. The water level in the No. 4 reactor's turbine building rose by 20 centimetres in 10 days. TEPCO said the levels of cesium-134 and 137 increased about 250-fold and iodine-131 increased about 12 times compared with the levels one month ago. Contamination of this level requires the TEPCO workers to prioritise the transfer or disposal of the water. TEPCO said the water being used to cool the No. 3 reactor could be leaking into No. 4 as their turbine buildings are connected. The government's nuclear agency separately said that water may be leaking from the No. 1 reactor container of the crisis-hit Fukushima plant, and that remote-controlled robots are expected to check the situation inside the reactor building, Kyodo news agency reported. The power company has also rewired the power grid at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant to secure supply of electricity in case of another strong quake. The company completed work to connect the cables for the No.1 and No.2 reactors to the grid for the No.5 and No.6 reactors last evening. The plant's six reactors had been supplied with electricity in pairs from external power sources. The work is aimed at ensuring that if any one of the three outside sources is cut off, the others can be used to cool the reactors. During the operation, external power to the No.1, No.2 and No.5....

More 'mass caesarians' in Kadakkal taluk hospital

More 'mass caesarian' cases have surfaced in a government hospital in Kerala with 16 c-sections being performed in three days in Kollam district, allegedly to suit holiday plans of an anaesthetist. A probe has been ordered into reports that 16 women underwent caesarian section on April 16, 18 and 19 at Kadakakal government hospital to suit the convenience of the anaesthetist who wanted to proceed on a 10-day leave from April 20. District Collector G Lalithambika has directed the District Medical Officer to conduct an enquiry and submit a report tomorrow, official sources said. The first scandal erupted last week, when 21 caesarian sections were performed in two days at Cherthala government hospital, following which the district medical officer in Alappuzha recommended action against four doctors, including the superintendent after a preliminary probe. In both cases, the allegation is that such a large number of operations were performed without taking into account basic factors like bed-strength in the state-run hospitals, where mostly women from less privileged sections come for delivery. The serious medical irregularity at Cherthala hospital came to light with relatives of some women complaining about the mass caesarian sections. It was alleged that some of these cases involved women who could wait a few more days for normal delivery. The doctors allegedly advanced the deliveries to suit Easter holiday plans. The government had a string of holidays ahead of Easter last week. But there are restrictions on doctors and paramedics in government health services absenting from duty on holidays. At Kadakkal, relatives of the women who underwent operation between April 16 and 19 alleged that gynaecologists had given them dates for normal delivery between April 25 and 30. According to Director of Health Services, Dr Kumari G Prema, the action against the four doctors at Cherthala would be decided after getting the detailed report from the Vigilance wing of the department. With the scandal breaking out, health experts have pointed out that the number of caesarians performed every year in Kerala far outstrips the WHO limits. While the UN health agency has fixed caesarian sections not to exceed 15 per every 100 deliveries, it is as high as 45 in Kerala.

We won't tolerate another Bhopal. Time for detailed studies as suggested by Prime Minister is gone. Now is the time for action and for nationwide ban on endosulfan, SFI Vice President P K Anand, said.
