Facebook Fix Privacy Settings.
Social networking site Facebook introduced a new set of privacy controls Wednesday in an attempt to quell criticism that it was lax about protecting users' personal information. The new controls are featured in a streamlined privacy panel that allows users much easier management of who can access their information.
'We believe in privacy. We believe in giving people control,' Facebook founder Marc Zuckerberg said at a press conference to announce the overhaul.
'But more and more, people want to share information. As long as they have good control over that, I think that's where the world is going'.
The new settings feature a single control that limits who can see the content posted by a Facebook user, and allow users to control who sees their list of friends and their personal pages - information that was previously available to all Facebook users.
'We've heard that people want a simple way to take control of their information,' Zuckerberg said. 'We looked at a video someone posted about how many steps it took to stop sharing their information, and we thought, 'Yeah, that's too much.''
Facebook is making it easier for users to opt out of instant participation on Facebook's partner sites. Zuckerberg said users can quickly and easily choose a setting that won't allow their information to be shared with third-party websites. The sharing of content will also apply to Facebook products launched in the future, he said.
Criticism of Facebook has been building since December, when the company introduced new settings that automatically shared more user information unless users took convoluted steps to opt out. In addition to the company's official policies, several security snafus allowed friends to snoop on users' Facebook chats and see which partner websites they had been surfing.
IPL parties not responsible for India's T20 WC Failure: Tendulkar
Pune, May 28 (PTI) Contradicting Mahendra Singh Dhoni's views, senior batsman Sachin Tendulkar today said IPL parties cannot not be blamed for India's debacle in the recent Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies. India could not reach the semifinals of the Twenty20 World Cup and skipper Dhoni said late night parties and continuous travelling during the Indian Premier League took a toll on the players' body. Tendulkar, however, begged to differ and said every player should be aware of their responsibilities. "Parties and performance are two different things that cannot be related and every player should know his responsibility," Tendulkar told reporters after laying foundation stone of an extension of Deenanath Mangeshkar hospital here. Besides, Tendulkar said parties are not new in cricket. "Parties used to be held even in the past," he said, laying stress on observing individual's discretion in the matter. Tendulkar, who led Mumbai Indians to the final of IPL III, said he avoided the parties since he wanted to be fresh for the next day's match. "I did not go for any of the IPL parties. I always wanted to be ready for the next match," he said. Tendulkar said every player should know how his body reacts and follow certain things to carry out his duties and responsibilities. Arguably the greatest batsman ever, Tendulkar said it was important to "understand your body" and strike a balance between play and rest.

Now they are moving upwards. Earlier, there have been 13 incidents of piracy within 400 m of Lakshadweep, Sushil said. Navy, Coastguard and Lakshadweep police had launched intense combing operations in the Lakshadweep waters after three Somalians landed at Minicoy island in Lakshadweep three days ago after abandoning their boat. They were too weak to talk or walk and have been hospitalised at Minicoy government hospital. The combing operations were launched in the waters around Lakshadweep Islands following reports of a suspicious boat being sighted about five km off Minicoy Island on May 26. Following the search, the abandoned boat was found. Subsequently, three Somalians were found in an unconscious state at the Northern end of Minicoy Island. 'On an average we are keeping around 10-15 shows per property for the movie. The advance bookings have already opened and it's picking up well while the paid preview bookings for Thursday is decent so far,' the source added.
Produced by Rakesh Roshan and directed by Anurag Basu, 'Kites' is a mega-budget venture worth Rs.150 crore in three versions - English, Hindi and Spanish. While the Hindi version will hit screens Friday, the crisper and racier English version, edited by Hollywood fame Brett Ratner, is scheduled for a May 28 release.
The film also stars Kabir Bedi and Kangana Ranaut in cameos.
Releasing simultaneously on more than 2,300 screens worldwide, including over 500 overseas in over 60 countries, it is being distributed by Reliance Big Pictures.
Shot in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Santa Fe, 'Kites' is a love story about an Indian man and a Latin woman who fall in love without understanding each others' languages. It is about their thrilling journey filled with precious moments and unexpected betrayal.
To cash in on the unprecedented buzz and hype, Amit Awasthi, manager (programming and operations) of Spice Cinemas, has big plans.
'We are looking at 'Kites' as a super duper hit. We are going to have 33 shows per day for the movie with the capacity of 8,600 seats per day and we expect a mass footfall because of its successful commercial banner and huge star cast like Hrithik and Barbara,' Awasthi said.
'3 Idiots' grossed about Rs.400 crore, making it Indian cinema's highest earner.
''Kites' will repeat the big bang theory in cinema. We are going to have on an average 15 shows per property and around three paid previews Thursday night. Hrithik and Barbara's chemistry is going to scorch the screens,' said Yogesh Raizada, corporate head (cinemas) of Wave Cinemas.
Director Basu says with its international appeal, 'Kites' will take Bollywood globally in the true sense.

13-year-old American climbs Everest
The youngest climber to reach the peak of Mount Everest hugged his tearful companions and told them he loved them. Then 13-year-old Jordan Romero took the satellite phone and called his mom.
"He says, 'Mom, I'm calling you from the top of the world,'" a giddy Leigh Anne Drake told The Associated Press from California, where she had been watching her son's progress minute by minute on a GPS tracker online.
"There were lots of tears and 'I love you! I love you!'" Drake said. "I just told him to get his butt back home."
With Saturday's success on the world's highest mountain, at 29,035 feet (8,850 meters) above sea level, Jordan is just one climb from his quest to reach the highest peaks on all seven continents.
The teenager with a mop of long curly hair — who climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa when he was 9 years old — says he was inspired by a painting in his school hallway of the seven continents' highest summits.“read more”
"Every step I take is finally toward the biggest goal of my life, to stand on top of the world," Jordan said earlier on his blog.
Before him, the youngest climber to scale Everest had been Temba Tsheri of Nepal, who reached the peak at age 16.
Also Saturday, officials said a Nepalese Sherpa who lives in Salt Lake City broke his own world record by climbing Everest for the 20th time. Apa, who goes by one name, went up to collect garbage, a growing environmental problem on the mountain.
Several climbers took advantage of Saturday's clear weather to reach the summit, Mountaineering Department official Tilak Pandey said. May is the most popular month for Everest climbs because of more favorable weather.
Jordan had never climbed above 8,000 meters (26,240 feet), but his team climbed quickly along the final ridge to arrive at the peak hours ahead of schedule.
"The first thing, they all hugged each other and said, 'I love you, I can't believe we're finally here' and started crying," said Rob Bailey, the team's spokesman, by phone from the United States.
"I don't think it ever dawned on them to say, 'Oh my gosh, Jordan, you're the youngest to get up here,'" Bailey said. "It's never been about setting a record, besting anybody else."
Jordan, from the San Bernardino Mountains ski town of Big Bear, California, was climbing Everest with his father, his father's girlfriend and three Sherpa guides.
Helicopter paramedic Paul Romero and his girlfriend have trained Jordan for top-level mountaineering. Romero and Karen Lundgren are adventure racers, competing in weeklong endurance races that combine biking, climbing, paddling and climbing through wilderness areas.
Before the group set out for Nepal in April, Paul Romero said he wanted nothing more than to make his son's dreams come true, even as the quest raised questions over how young is too young to scale Everest, a mountain where harsh conditions have caused scores of climbers' deaths.
"It's my dream we are following to the highest points on every continent," Jordan says on his blog. "I know it's a big goal and lucky for me my family is supporting me every step of the way."
Jason Edwards, a guide with the Seattle-based International Mountain Guides, said the outfitter has a minimum age limit of 18 for Everest expeditions because of liability issues. Still, he applauds the 13-year-old's feat.
"When a unique person with that spirit comes along, we have to encourage it," Edwards said. "I'm excited he made it."
The group, dubbed "Team Jordan" on the teen's blog, approached the peak along the technically more difficult, less-traveled northern route from the base camp on the Chinese side.
Unlike neighboring Nepal, the other approach to Everest, China has no age limit for climbers. Jordan registered with Chinese officials in April, said Zhang Mingxing, secretary general of China Tibet Mountaineering Association.
No interview with Jordan would be possible until he returns to advance base camp, which could take a couple of days, Bailey said.
Climbers stay overnight at three or four camps before the summit, depending on their route and pace. Jordan's team spent nearly five weeks on the mountain acclimatizing and preparing for Saturday's predawn final climb.
Jordan carried a number of good luck charms, including a pair of kangaroo testicles given to him by a friend who has cancer.
"That's the one that probably meant the most," Bailey said.
At the summit, Jordan left behind his lucky rabbit's foot and planted some seeds that a Buddhist monk at a local monastery had given him for luck on his journey, Bailey said. Then he took the satellite phone and called his mom.
"He's such a good boy and he calls his mom every day," Drake said, laughing, just minutes later.
Drake said her son, an eighth grader, took two months of homework with him to keep up in school.
Family friend Sharon Gytri, of Big Bear, called Jordan a "hardworking and down-to-earth" kid. Like the 13-year-old's mother, Gytri was tracking the dot that represented his GPS device on an online map.
"We were watching the little dot until it went pow and turned green, right on the summit. And everyone cheered," she said.
Gytri said Big Bear is a close-knit community where people, many of them outdoors enthusiasts, "keep an eye on each other. "
Another resident, Katherine Blanc, is putting together a photo essay-style storybook about Jordan, beginning with him looking at the school mural of the world's peaks.
"It's a fascinating, sometimes harrowing, and very exciting story," she said. "He's trying to inspire kids to put down video games and go outside and set goals, big ones. He wants to inspire others."
Jordan continues the recent trend of young global adventurers. Earlier this month, 16-year-old Australian Jessica Watson became the youngest person to sail around the globe solo, nonstop and unassisted. Thousands lined Sydney Harbor to cheer as she cruised past the finish line in her pink yacht.
A Dutch court late last year blocked an even younger sailor, 14-year-old sailor Laura Dekker, from pursuing a similar round-the-world voyage, ordering her to prepare more and wait at least until this year before starting.
And in January, 17-year-old Johnny Collinson of Utah became the youngest person to climb the highest peaks on all seven continents.
Just one mountain remains in Jordan's own quest to climb those peaks, the Vinson Massif in Antarctica.
Jordan's team leaves for Antarctica in December, Bailey said.

Survivors tell of miracle escape from India air crash
MANGALORE, India (AFP) – Some of the eight survivors who crawled or were carried from the burning remains of a plane that crashed in India on Saturday told of their escape amid scenes of horror and death.
Officials said 158 of the 166 passengers and crew aboard the plane died when it overshot the runaway and plunged down a steep slope when coming in to land near the southern city of Mangalore on a flight from Dubai.
"The plane veered off toward some trees on the side and then the cabin filled with smoke," Umer Farooq, his face covered in burn cream, told the NDTV news channel at a local hospital.
"The plane overshot the runway only to stop inside a forest area... it burst into flames," he said. "I got caught in some cables but managed to scramble out.
"My hands, face and legs are all burnt. There was an announcement that the plane would land in 15 minutes. There was lot of smoke fire inside, there was no way to get out. I think the plane hit something."“read more”
Another survivor, K.P. Manikutty, said he had managed to escape as the plane's fuselage smashed open.
"There was no warning to passengers about any trouble and it appeared a smooth landing," Manikutty told reporters.
"Immediately on touching the ground, the aircraft jerked and in a few moments hit something. Then it split in the middle and caught fire. I just jumped from the gap," he said.
Sabrina Haq, a 20-year-old medical student who suffered head injuries, told AFP that she "jumped out when the plane toppled over into the valley."
One person emerged unscathed from the wreckage, Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel told a press briefing.
Survivor Putturismail Abdulla told the UNI press agency: "I thought the flight would come to a stop soon and prepared myself to get down. But there was a big burst sound.
"Soon I saw the aircraft breaking into two near me. Out of sheer desperation, I jumped out and ran to safety.
"Looking back I saw the aircraft breaking down into pieces and caught fire. God saved my life. Despite injuries in the leg, I went to a nearby village and called my friend who picked me up and took me to a hospital."
Television pictures showed rescue teams struggling down mud slopes to the the wreckage site, where many bodies remained inside the plane.
"One of my co-passengers fell into the fire while one escaped with me through the opening that was made after the plane broke into two," said Abdulla, a shop manager in Dubai who was returning home after five months.
"It all happened within a few seconds. I found another person. Together we walked for about 20 minutes through the jungle before locals came and helped us."
Families waiting at the airport for their relatives and friends wept uncontrollably as emergency workers rushed to the disaster scene.
"I can't believe I survived the crash," said G.K. Pradeep reliving the moments before the tragedy.
"There were vibrations before the plane crashed... as soon as it hit the ground, I managed to get out and jump into a pit. There was smoke all over as the plane caught fire. After ten minutes, there was an explosion," he said.
