An unidentified man attempted to fling a shoe at Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as he entered the Tagore Hall in Paldi locality of Ahmedabad here Sunday to address a rally. The shoe did not hit the prime minister. The person was whisked away by the police for questioning.
More than 500 people have gathered at the public meeting here to listen to the prime minister. Police said the person who flung the white sneaker was near the press gallery in the first row.This is the fourth occasion when shoes have been hurled at political leaders.
Security personnel soon overpowered the man, identified as Hitesh Chauhan, a city-based computer engineer in his mid-20s.
In New Delhi, spokespersons of the Congress as well as the BJP condemned Sunday's incident. The prime minister has told police not to press charges against the young man, it was learnt.
